‘Skipping-stone’ inspired bridge on schedule

St. Patrick’s Island Bridge is closer to completion!

Inspired by a ‘skipping stone’, the arches of the bridge are being delivered in three phases and should be up sometime in October.

“We are starting with the fabrication of the centre arches which are approximately 32.0 metres long by 4.0 metres high. Afterwards, we will move to construct the north arches which are 49.0 metres long by 7.5 metres high and will finish with the south arches which are the largest at 99.0 metres long by 16.0 metres high”, said Michael Brown, president & CEO, Calgary Municipal Land Corporation (CMLC). “We expect to finish the on-site arch assembly in October, 2013”.

After that there is painting and deck work to be done and it should be open by the end on the year.

The existing structure will have to be taken down to complete the new bridge and that will happen in the next eight weeks diverting pedestrian and bicycle commuters to other city crossings.
