New cancer centre for Calgary

Calgary is getting a new, state of the art cancer centre.

The facility will be built at the Foothills Medical Center and will include advanced cancer diagnostic and treatment technologies as well as dedicated research space.

Health Minister Fred Horne says the Tom Baker Cancer Centre has served the province well but it needs to be replaced as it was never designed to meet the level of demand being placed on it now.

“The Tom Baker Cancer Centre has served Alberta well, but it was never designed to meet this level of demand,” said Health Minister Fred Horne. “This new facility will ensure services are integrated for more effective and seamless patient care, and will also maintain Alberta’s place as a leader in cancer research and education.”

The province will partner with the Alberta Cancer Foundation on the project that group has already donated $200 million.

“Our foundation is very proud to be a partner in building a new cancer centre in Calgary,” said John Osler, Chair of the Alberta Cancer Foundation’s Board of Trustees. “Our commitment to raising $200 million is a commitment to a cancer-free future. Over 200,000 Albertans support our foundation, and last year alone we raised $37 million.”

The government has also not ruled out a public private partnership to finance the rest of the project.

Construction could begin in 2014.
