Guilty plea in 2010 murder

There was a surprise guilty plea in court Monday, in a random unprovoked murder in the fall of 2010.

27-year-old white supremacist Tyler Sturrup admitted that he and another man attacked and beat Mark Mariani to death simply because he walked into the same northwest alley at the same time.

He pleaded guilty to second degree murder and was promptly sentenced to life without the chance for parole for 10 years.

The victim’s brother tells the Calgary Sun, the family was stunned by Monday’s turn of events and hopes Sturrup’s remorse is sincere.

The second person charged in the case will go to trial in November.
