Budget’s good or bad, depends on who you ask

There is mixed reaction to the budget.

The Chief Economist at the Calgary Chamber of Commerce, Ben Brunnen, says this is a good budget for Albertans and for Alberta businesses.

“Overall this has been a well positioned budget, it seems their assumptions are relatively reasonable, but we would like to see them continue with the creation of a Provincial Budget Office to really give that objective view to the economic assumptions behind the budget.”

Derek Fildebrandt with the Canadian Taxpayers Federation says this is worse than the way Don Getty did his budgets.

“When you’re saving while you are running up debt, that’s the same as buying an RRSP while you run up the credit card.  They are taking the money from a credit card and putting it onto an RRSP.  It’s frankly a baffling way to run the finances of a serious government.”

Alberta Health Services say it was prepared for the lower than expected funding increase, adding “There will be tough choices and difficult decisions in the months ahead.”
