The Alberta Union of provincial employees is warning about cuts they say could have serious consequences for safety in the province.
AUPE President Guy Smith says slashes to offender monitoring programs and weekend sentencing options mean courts will have to choose between overcrowding correctional facilities and releasing criminals without keeping proper tabs on them.
The government is pulling $5.07-million from correctional facility budgets.
The electronic monitoring program, surveillance programs run by peace officers, and offender check in centres in Edmonton and Calgary will all be phased out this year.
