Keeper fired after gorilla escape

The Calgary Zoo has fired one of its keepers after some gorillas got out of their enclosure and into a kitchen last Friday.

Officials now say it happened because the keeper failed to lock the door properly.

The area curator says, the public was never at risk but there could have been tragic consequences.

Fortunately, Dr. Malu Celli says, in a news release Wednesday morning, neither the gorillas or any staff members were seriously hurt.

While no breaches in emergency response have been found, offiicals with the zoo say it is standard procedure to review all safety protocols to see if there can be any improvements.
