Probe into chain reaction crash could take weeks

Mounties say it could be weeks before their investigation into Thursday’s multi vehicle pile-up on the Q.E. II south of Edmonton is completed.

RCMP Corporal Colette Zazulak tells 660News their probe into the massive wreck involving more than 100 vehicles is just getting underway.

Zazaluk says in the coming days they expect to collect accident reports from all the drivers involved and that information will help them determine exactly what happened.

She says it’s easy to blame the weather because a spring snowstorm was howling at the time, but she says it’s also possible some drivers were at fault and if that’s the case charges could be filed.

Despite all the carnage only one serious injury was reported.

22 people were taken to hospitals in the area while dozens of other people were treated at the scene.

A 60 kilometre stretch of the major highway between Calgary and Edmonton was closed for about 12 hours following the crash which occurred near Leduc.
