Banff maternity ward closes

The maternity ward at Banff Springs Hospital has officially shut down, despite attempts by citizens to keep it open.

An application to stay the closure, pending a judicial review, was denied Monday.

Lawyer Clint Docken wants the courts to overturn Alberta Health Services’ decision that forces expectant mothers to travel to Canmore instead to deliver their babies.

Dr. Ian McDonald tells The Calgary Herald shutting down the maternity ward puts pregnant women at risk.

A date for the judicial review will be set on April 8th.
