Unsafe work sites continue, despite new rules

Unsafe work sites are still on the rise in Calgary despite increased fines and a crackdown by the city.

New stats show building safety complaints have been steadily increasing since 2008, and building inspectors say they’ve already recorded 150 this year.

Sweeping changes were brought in last spring in response to the August 2009 death of a three-year-old killed by a falling steel bundle at a downtown work site.

The Calgary Herald reports in that case, two construction companies were fined the maximum $15,000 each.

New rules require building developers to submit public protection plans before they are awarded building permits.
