Two suspects in custody after vehicle rams into RCMP cruiser

Complaints of erratic driving turned near deadly late Monday afternoon.

Around 5:20 p.m., a sheriff with the Airdrie Integrated Traffic Unit was responding to a complaint of an erratic driver on Highway 2 in the Carstairs area.

The sheriff found the blue Ford truck, with two men inside, speeding northbound on the highway, and tried to pull it over.

The driver of the Ford swerved at the sheriff’s vehicle, causing a crash which sent the sheriff off the road and into the cable barrier that divides the two lanes.

The suspects fled the scene and their truck broke down on a nearby range road.

A passing, good Samaritan stopped to help, but he was then assaulted by the two men who stole his truck and fled again.

RCMP units from surrounding areas, along with the assistance of an RCMP police service dog and the HAWCS helicopter were called into assist.

The second stolen truck was found crashed in a ditch and the two suspects were then taken into custody.

Both men are known to police and charges are pending.
