Although the Calgary Hitmen eliminated Red Deer’s junior hockey team from the WHL playoffs on Thursday, hockey fans in the central Alberta city still have plenty to cheer about this week.
The six-day Allan Cup tournament kicks off Monday afternoon.
Teams from Alberta, B.C., Saskatchewan, Ontario and Newfoundland are all in contention for the senior AAA hockey championship.
Co-chair of the Allan Cup committee, Jeff McInnis, says it may be a surprising level of talent for the casual fan taking in some of the action.
“Most of our men are Western League men, or NCAA men, that have gone on to play pro, whether it is in the National, or the American League or East Coast League or the Central League, or university players,” said McInnis.
McInnis expects about 1,800 hockey fans to fill the Red Deer Arena for every game of the tournament.
Alberta’s representatives are the Bentley Generals and the Stony Plain Eagles.
