Spring snowstorms not expected to impact roads budget

Despite a number of winter storms in the past few months, Calgary’s roads department is confident it will meet its snow and ice removal budget

Sean Somers with the roads department tells 660News, tracking expenditures to improve traction on city streets during the winter months is a little confusing.

Somers says the snow and ice removal season runs from October 1st to April 15th each year.

However, budgeting for the roads department follows a January to December calendar.

Somers says so far the spring of 2013 is much like spring 2012.

Last year, the city spent $34.2-million on snow and ice control; that’s $800,000 under budget.

Somers says most of the costs associated with clearing the streets during the winter are already established, but big storms could push up overtime costs and the amount of salt, sand and gravel they need to lay down.
