“4-20” rally at the Legislature

Thousands of Albertans lit it up at the Alberta Legislature Saturday afternoon.

Saturday is April 20th – a day when marijuana users typically rally to show their support for legalizing the psychoactive drug.

The cannabis community “Alberta 4-20” estimates they had close to 12,000 people gather in Edmonton to support the legalization of marijuana.

Keith Fagin, the group’s founder, hopes to educate the public about how Canada’s prohibition is more harmful than the plant itself.

Fagin believes their efforts will pay off within the decade.

“By 2020, I would predict, at the very least, decriminalization,” he said. “If not, say legalization like a beer and wine model where I can grow a few plants, or I could produce a few bottles of beer,” he said.

Fagin adds the legalization of marijuana would allow more Canadian tax dollars to be spent on health and education, instead of the costly enforcement of marijuana’s prohibition and adds the cold weather didn’t scare anyone away.

“It’s getting out there and celebrating and enjoying the day and as we got closer and closer to 4:20, the crowds were getting bigger and bigger,” he said. “At 4:20, it’s a big smoke cloud over the legislature.”
