Will Canadians have to pay a fee to enter the U.S.?

If an item in the budget for U.S. Homeland Security comes to fruition, Canadians may have to pay a fee to enter the United States in the future.

The budget item came to light Friday, courtesy of a Congressman from Buffalo, New York.

Representative Brian Higgins pointed to the line buried deep in the 2014 Homeland Security budget.

The Democrat slammed the proposal, noting it comes at a time when the American and Canadian governments are working to streamline cross-border movement.

Details are scant about the proposed fee.  There is no word on how it would be collected, or whether travelers would have to pay it entering the United States, leaving the U.S. or both.

According to the Calgary Herald, the budget item will be studied for the next nine months.
