Delving into the social issues that make Canadians sick

The Canadian Medical Association wants to spark a dialogue on transforming health care and Tuesday night they’ll be needing input from Calgarians.

Their nation-wide town hall tour has come to Calgary as they look into the social factors that cause poor health.

Dr. Anna Reid is President of the CMS, she says they’ve become concerned about things like the growing gap between the rich and the poor.

Reid says research has shown items like income, housing and education can make up 50 per cent of your health outcome.

“Things can change, we know that the number one issue affecting health is poverty,” she tells 660News. “And it just takes political will to look at ways to reduce poverty. I know it’s a very complex situation.”

The goal is to look at ways that governments and stakeholders can improve the standard of care for Canadians.

The event gets underway at 7 o’clock and is open to the public at Theatre Junction Grand on 608 1st Street SW.
