Bishop defends priest’s rep

A Calgary Catholic bishop is defending the reputation of a local priest, who he claims was falsely accused of sex crimes in India.

At a defamation hearing Tuesday, Bishop Fred Henry testified accusations that Father Newton Rodrigues had fondled a 13-year-old girl in 2003 were determined to be unfounded by Indian police.

The Calgary Sun reports despite clearing the reverend’s name, Henry says congregation members and parents of children at Calgary’s St. Bernadette’s were concerned.

Rodrigues is seeking a declaration from the court that he was defamed, and $600,000 in damages.
