As the Liberals unveil a new positive ad campaign to promote Justin Trudeau, it is revealed that the Conservatives are using a taxpayer-funded program to orchestrate a mass-mail campaign to attack the new Liberal leader.
The whole point of the TV ad with Trudeau, which shows him sitting on the edge of a desk in a classroom, is to counter the negative campaign from the Conservatives.
“Canadians deserve better. We can keep mistrusting and finding flaws in each other or we can pull together and get to work,” Trudeau says in the ad.
But while the Grits attempt to go positive, the Tories plan to send out flyers that mock Trudeau with fancy cursive writing, a picture of him with facial hair and sparkles in the background.
Government House Leader Peter Van Loan does not think the Conservatives have done anything wrong.
“What you have here is a piece of communications that exactly follows all the rules set by the All Party Board of Internal Economy.”
But Liberal MP Dominic LeBlanc says this is not right.
“If there’s no rule that says you shouldn’t use taxpayers’ resources to distribute partisan attack ads, then we need to change the rules.”
Partisan TV ads are paid for by the parties but these flyers could cost taxpayers up to $29,000.
