RCMP confirm three adults and two kids have been killed after an accident in South Surrey.
Mounties say it appears a white Dodge Caravan was speeding along 32nd, when the driver ran a red light and t-boned another vehicle that was travelling north on 176th.
RCMP Sgt. Dale Carr says this is one of the worst collision he has attended. “I can tell you, from my experience of 26 years in the RCMP, attending multiple motor vehicle crash, multiple homicides, [this is] one of the most horrific scenes I have ever seen.”
The vehicle that was struck was an import car of some sort, but it’s so mangled Mounties can’t tell what it is, but think it might be a Toyota. It is going to take investigators some time to figure out what it is.
The vehicle has been ripped in half, and is in two large pieces. All the people in that vehicle were killed. St. Carr says Mounties are facing the possibility of having to tell family members that an entire family has been wiped out, but they are not sure about the nature of the relationship between the people in the vehicle that was destroyed.
Both vehicles are sitting in the parking lot of a gas station that is under construction.
The driver of the minivan is the only survivor and has been taken to a regional trauma hospital.
Callers to the newsroom report seeing debris stretching most of the block.
“There’s jaws of life, there’s cops running around everywhere, it’s completely blocked off. They’re stopping all the traffic, both ways, and they’re turning us all around on the same side of the highway because we can’t get over the median. It’s a complete disaster.”
