Premier announces new Calgary schools

The premier is following through on one of her government’s election promises.

Alison Redford made a stop in northeast Calgary Wednesday to announce plans to build nine new and replacement schools in the city.

Redford and the education minister were joined by several school board officials and some parents at the YMCA on Falconridge Drive.

The schools include a new high school next to the Saddletown YMCA,  new K-to-4 schools in Copperfield, New Brighton and Evanston, but the biggest cheer was for a new school badly needed in the northwest.

“I know a number of you will be excited.” she said. “I met some of you outside today. We are adding a middle school for the busting communities of Rocky Ridge and Royal Oak.”

The news coming as a relief to community association president Jeff Walker.  “I’ve got a son in Kindergarten at Royal Oak school right now and they’re over capacity. There’s 600 plus being bused out of our community every day to go to middle school, so this will make a big difference.” He said.

CBE Chair Pat Cochrane hopes this is just the beginning.

The Calgary Catholic division is getting new schools in Auburn Bay and Evanston.

The government estimates more than 20 new schools announced across the province will cost $503-million over the next three years.
