It’s a new twist on an old scam.
That’s what the Better Business Bureau is saying about a recently uncovered money laundering case in Calgary.
The BBB’s Cammy Laird says a Calgary man almost fell for the ‘Mystery Shopper Scam.’
“They send you a cheque, or in this case travelers cheques, have you cash it, then your first mystery shop is with a wire transfer service like Western Union or Money Mart,” explains Laird.
Laird says they haven’t seen fake travelers cheques used in this scam before, and that’s concerning as they can be harder to spot than regular fraudulent cheques.
Luckily, the Calgary man became suspicious and called the BBB who, with the help of police, identified the cheques as fake.
Laird says always those interested in becoming mystery shoppers should do some homework before getting involved to ensure the company they are dealing with are legitimate.
