According to a new study in terms of prosperity Calgary is second in the world behind Paris, France.
The fifth edition of the scorecard on prosperity, which is compiled by the Toronto Region Board of Trade is out.
The study examines 33 different economic and social indicators ranging from income and employment growth to air quality and crime rates.
Calgary didn’t have 2nd place scores across the board, but overall the numbers were strong enough to move the city from it’s top 5 ranking last year, to second place.
BMO economist Sal Guieterra tells 660News, he is not surprised by the survey results, because demand for oil and gas remains strong, and those commodities continue to fuel Calgary’s economy.
Guieterra suggests civic and business leaders in the Stampede city should use their good fortunes to diversify the economy, to soften any future economic blow if demand for energy products or commodity prices tumble.
The report which is 81 pages long also recommends if Calgary wants to maintain it’s top ranking, some short comings in infrastructure and housing need to be addressed.
Only one other Canadian city cracked the top 10 that was Toronto, which finished in 6th place.
