Fire blazing in the SW

Firefighters are battling several grass fires in the Edworthy Park area.

The fire has resulted in the closure of northbound Sarcee Trail at Bow Trail with the blaze getting very close to those northbound lanes.

The first calls started coming in to the 660News newsroom and traffic centre at around 1:00 pm Friday afternoon.

What started as several small grass fire turned into a full blown blaze. just to the south of 16th Ave and to the east of Sarcee Trail right on the banks.

Smoke is blowing north and west across the communities of Bowness and Montgomery.

The Alberta government is sending out resources to help crews battle the flames.

An Environment Sustainable Resource Development spokesperson says extra helicopters and firefighters are being sent to help extinguish the fires but because there are a number of wildfires in the provinces, resources are stretched.

If more help is needed, ESRD will send out more help.
