University of Calgary cuts enrollment

It will be tougher to get into the Faculty of Arts at the University of Calgary this fall.

The U of C is cutting enrolment by 200,  as part of its efforts to make up for a nearly $41-million shortfall.

President Elizabeth Cannon tells 660News the number of people admitted to Medicine and Nursing programs is also shrinking, but that’s not related to the budget cuts.  She says temporary funding they received a few years ago is now gone.

Cannon says they have had to make some tough decisions and a lot of hard work remains heading into the next fiscal year.

The cuts come a month after Mount Royal University announced it would be slashing several Arts programs, including Theatre Arts and Music Performance.
