Alberta Health Services is launching a new air ambulance plan in the province.
Four new critical care transport teams will now be strategically based in the smaller communities of Peace River, Grand Prairie, Fort McMurray and Medicine Hat.
Medical Director Dr. Mark Mackenzie tells 660News, while in the past they’ve been focused on getting a patient to advanced care quickly, they are shifting their thinking.
“This is about trying to get advanced levels of care out to the patients as quickly as possible. It’s a big difference in philosophy but these are like mini mobile ICUs.” He explains.
Dr. Mackenzie says the new plan fits nicely into the current upgrading of STARS helicopters and will allow greater reach and care for patients.
