Job cuts at Rockyview Hospital

The Alberta Union of Provincial Employees says Alberta Health Services is cutting jobs as it closes seniors beds at Rockyview General Hospital.

AUPE says they’ve learned 23 nursing aides and 10 licensed practical nurses will be laid off.

AUPE Vice President Susan Slade says the layoffs are outrageous especially in a province with huge waiting lists for long term care.

“A year ago, Premier Redford promised 1,000 new long-term-care spaces every year, but since the election all we have seen is bed closures. A year ago AHS told us recruiting for seniors care was their biggest challenge, but all we have seen is layoffs,” Slade said.

The last quarterly performance report said 436 patients were waiting in hospital beds for continuing care placement.

The bed closures had been previously announced.
