It’s hoped in the not too distant future the data that is generated in the New Alberta Motor Association Active Traffic and Demand Management Laboratory will benefit everyone behind the wheel.
Don Szarko with the AMA tells 660News researchers will use real time traffic data to develop new solutions to the various traffic issues in the province.
Sensors have been placed along Deerfoot Trail between McKnight and Peigan with the information being relayed to the Schulich School of Engineering at the U of C.
The research could lead to ramp metres and variable speed limits along with new warning and alert systems.
Szarko says the AMA provided the bulk of the seed money to get the facility up and running a few years ago, but adds you can’t put a price of something like road safety.
Researchers will also look at ways to make public transportation more attractive by improving travel times and using GPS to estimate bus arrival times.
