Canyon Meadows community public safety forum

Several units of the Calgary Police Service and Calgary Public Services attended a public safety forum in the southwest community of Canyon Meadows.

The forum gave members of the community a chance to learn about community policing and preventing crimes in their neighbourhood.

The Canyon Meadows Community Center hall was packed with people of all ages hoping to learn how to make their community safer.

“Community safety is really at the top of everyone’s minds at the neighbourhood levels,” Diane Colley-Urquhart, Ward 13 Alderman explains, “Citizens expect our police service to be out patrolling the neighbourhoods and to have a presence, so there’s a huge presence today from the Calgary Police Services and all the different units.”

The forum gave members of the community an opportunity to voice their concerns, as well as equip them with the knowledge to deal with potential crimes in their neighbourhoods.

“In Canyon Meadows and in many Ward 13 communities there are illegal grow-ops. This of course is organized crime infiltrating the neighbourhoods and having these illegal operations going on. The other issue is petty vandalism. Where doors are being kicked in and patio furniture is being thrown in pools,” Colley-Urquhart says.

The Calgary Police Service Crime Prevention Unit, Canine Unit and Police and Crisis Team were just a few of the informational booths set up, with over a dozen officers interacting with the public.
