An early Sunday morning wake-up call for about 50 residents in a downtown high-rise apartment building.
Around 3:30 a.m. Calgary fire crews were called to the 500 block of 12th Avenue SW on reports of a fire.
But when firefighters arrived they found a garbage dumpster on fire and the smoke from the fire had spread throughout the high-rise as well as two neighbouring buildings.
The other building, a seven-storey commercial high-rise, was unoccupied at the time.
John Cherweniuq with Calgary Fire said residents were allowed back in around 5:00 Sunday morning.
“It was just a little bit cold outside, so the residents that were evacuated were displaced at the time, so just to keep them warm, the Fire Department called a bus to the scene and they were housed in there until they could be housed back into their suites,” he said.
No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire is under investigation.
