Crash-filled weekend on Calgary and area roads

In the coming days, traffic investigators are expected to release more information about a number of separate wrecks that ended in death and injury.

The RCMP is still piecing together the events that led up to a multi-vehicle crash on Springbank Road and Range Road 32 on the southwest edge of Calgary Sunday around 5:30 p.m.

Sergeant Patricia Neely tells 660News, it appears a vehicle travelling northbound failed to stop at a stop sign and plowed into an eastbound van, which was then grazed by another vehicle travelling westbound.

A total of 10 people were injured; eight, including four children, were rushed to hospital.  All of those victims are now listed in stable, non life-threatening condition.

In town, around 3:30 p.m. Sunday a cube van struck a motorcycle on Centre Street North, sending two people on the bike to hospital; one of them is listed in critical condition.

Police took to social media to track down the cube van that was involved; it was spotted a short time later and its driver was arrested, but charges have yet to be laid.

Saturday afternoon there was a fiery head-on crash on Highway 8 on the west edge of the city near Highway 22.

The driver of a jeep was killed; the tragedy has renewed calls for that busy stretch of road to be twinned.

Alberta’s Transportation minister Ric McIver says that is not in the foreseeable future, urging drivers to take greater responsibility for their actions while behind the wheel.

Late Sunday, a driver in northern Alberta was killed after driving his van into a semi tractor-trailer unit which was parked in a rest area along Highway 63.
