Mount Royal University approves balanced budget

The budget is balanced, but it’s come at a cost for Mount Royal University.

A funding shortage from the province meant the post-secondary school had to find $14-million.

Spokesperson Paula Arab tells 660News, impacts will be felt across the campus.

“Less I.T. support, maintenance of yard work, no flowers this summer, it’s everything.” She says.

Arab says they tried to minimize the effects on students, but many programs were put on the chopping block, including diplomas in theatre arts, music performance and disability studies and certificates in forensic studies, journalism, prenatal and neonatal nursing care, and studies in aging.

MRU has also eliminated the University transfer for engineering.

Students already enrolled in two year programs will be allowed to finish out next year.

“All of those programs will be offered again next year, and students currently enrolled will be given the opportunity to complete their program.” She explains.

A new student fee is also being introduced; officials estimate in will bring in $2.2 million in additional revenue.
