Seperate kitchen fires both lead to evacuations

Separate kitchen fires in Calgary Saturday both caused evacuations.

The first just after 4:00 p.m., in the 1300 block of 17th Avenue S.W. where after reports of a fir, all occupants self-evacuated.

The small fire was extinguished and the lone tenant received minor injuries and was treated for smoke inhalation.

The second around 8:30 p.m. was on 50th St. N.W. where 50 people were evacuated because of a second floor blaze.

Crews used an eight-meter ground ladder to get in extinguishing the fire.

Battalion Chief Al Magwood said it’s a safety message for everyone.

“If you have a pot on the stove that’s burning, use a lid instead of trying to move the pot over to the sink,” he said.

There were no other injuries.
