Interstellar to shoot in Southern Alberta this summer

Some Hollywood talent could soon descend on Calgary as Batman boss Christopher Nolan considers bringing his latest blockbuster to Southern Alberta.

The man who brought us the ‘Dark Knight’ trilogy has reportedly picked the wild rose province to film his sci-fi flick “Interstellar.”

It will highlight an interstellar voyage to the deepest depths of our scientific understanding.

According to IMDb.com, it’s based on Kip Thorne’s theories of gravity fields, worm holes and hypotheses.

Interstellar stars Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, Michael Caine and Jessica Chastain.

According to media reports, preparations will begin next month and then shooting will begin in early August.

But Minister of Culture Heather Klimchuk says it’s not a done deal just yet.

Klimchuk says they’re still waiting for Warner Brothers to give it the green light, right now Alberta is only in the running.

“It’s probably going to happen very soon, sometimes it’s right up until the last minute,” she tells 660News. “But I think the word is out and I’m just very thrilled that Warner Brothers is looking at Alberta again.”

“We know that the spin-off that happens to all of the production companies, whether they’re in sound, or lighting, or digital or all the technicians, it’s that spin-off effect that we look for that that keeps Albertans employed,” says Klimchuk.

It’s not the first time Nolan has chosen Alberta as a backdrop after filming parts of Inception in 2009 in Canada with Leonardo DiCaprio and Ellen Page.

They shot it in Fortress Mountain, just west of Calgary.

Television and film production has been a mainstay in Alberta since the 1940’s with Marilyn Monroe’s ‘River of No Return.’

Other Hollywood blockbusters that have been filmed here include ‘Bridge to Terabithia’ and ‘Brokeback Mountain.’
