At-risk youth programs expanded

Two police pilot programs aimed at preventing kids from ending up on the wrong side of the law, will be expanded citywide.

Police Chief Rick Hanson says reported crime is dropping in Calgary, and these programs can only drive it down further.

In September the Start Smart, Stay Safe program will be reaching youth at schools across the city, aimed at developing youth self esteem.

The Calgary Herald reports the Multi-Agency School Support Team, partnering troubled kids with social workers, is also getting a boost.

Hanson says they need to reach kids before they fall through the cracks.
