Rocky View fire cuts alarm union boss

A massive increase in firefighting costs over the last decade will likely lead to layoffs at the Rocky View County Fire Department.

The county plans to cut one of four firefighters in each of its four full-time stations.

Lorne West, Western Canada Vice President of the International Association of Firefighters, tells The Calgary Sun the move will reduce safety levels in an already “deeply dysfunctional” service.

West says there are minimum thresholds where firefighting can be done safely, and there’s no question those will be compromised.

Fire spending in Rocky View has increased from $1.1-million to $8.3-million since 2003.
