Edmonton wins with secondary suites

A new report says Alberta’s capital has Calgary beat when it comes to secondary suites.

The document, due before a city committee Wednesday, is asking the province to help fund safety upgrades, and wants red tape reduced for landlords.

According to The Calgary Herald, the report cites by-law changes that were responsible for helping Edmonton develop more affordable housing through legalized secondary suites, since 2009.

Alderman Gian-Carlo Carra says the city needs to help legalize up to 60,000 illegal suites in Calgary.

Carra says because it’s not a regulated market, tenant rights and safety is not being addressed.
