Deadly crash with street sweeper closes major road

The driver of an SUV is dead after hitting a street sweeper in the northwest Tuesday morning.

It happened just before 3 a.m. along Shaganappi Trail between John Laurie Boulevard and Country Hills Boulevard.

There were two street sweepers there at the time; both were working the inside lanes of Shaganappi when they noticed the vehicle travelling at a high rate of speed.

Before they could react, the car slammed into the back of the northbound machine, in what’s being called a violent collision.

Sgt. Mike ter Kuile says damage to both vehicles is extensive.

“The rear of the street sweeper has essentially been taken off and it’s destroyed the right rear wheel, so fairly significant impact,” he says.

According to police, damage to the SUV was so bad it nearly peeled the front of the vehicle open like a can-opener.

Sgt. ter Kuile says they are reasonably sure they know who the victim is; he is not the registered owner of the vehicle.

He is 30-years-old, and officers are in the process of notifying next of kin.

Alcohol has not been ruled out as a factor in the crash; investigators are waiting for the results of a toxicology test.
