Opposition says firing AHS board not going to fix the problem

The Liberal party wants to see the health minister go; saying Fred Horne should either resign or be fired and they want an emergency sitting of the legislature to discuss what the party calls a health care crisis.
“The health care system has only become more chaotic and inefficient on Fred Horne’s watch,” says Alberta Liberal Leader Raj Sherman. “It’s time for him to go. Sacking the AHS board is just shuffling deck chairs. What this ship really needs is a new captain.”
The NDP are calling for replacement of the board with a deputy health minister
“The Minister’s decision to relieve the entire Board of their duties demonstrates a lack of accountability and transparency; the loss of control over expenses and compensation; a high level of turmoil at the top of AHS; and the deficiency of a private governance model of AHS,” said NDP Leader Brian Mason. “In order to avoid any disruption to frontline services, the Ministry needs to bring the governance of Alberta’s health care in-house.”
Wildrose leader Danielle Smith says just replacing the board will not fix the problem, going back to local decision making will.
“Replacing one unelected and unaccountable board with another unelected and unaccountable board isn’t going to fix the problem,” Smith said. “The problem is the PC government has created a monster it can no longer control. It’s only a matter of time before we’re back here again, with an uncontrollable board mismanaging the health care system. The solution is to fix the system, not change the front office.”
