CBE defends report card changes

The Calgary Board of Education is defending a controversial pilot report card project.
Beginning September, select schools grades kindergarten to nine will be graded by performance indicators: exemplary, evident, emerging, and will need assistance.
The changes are getting mixed reactions from teachers and parents.
CBE Chief Superintendent Naomi Johnson says she understands change can be upsetting, but this is the board’s way of trying to improve the way students are assessed and communicating that with parents even though teachers will no longer be leaving comments on report cards.
She adds this is a learning process and they are using their best professional judgment.
Parents with children receiving the new report card grades are urged to offer their feedback to teachers, schools and the board.
