The RCMP is launching an investigation into the $90,000 cheque written between Senator Mike Duffy and Nigel Wright, Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s chief of staff at the time.
It’s the latest twist in the senate expense scandal that has rocked federal politics.
The RCMP isn’t releasing any details at this point but during question period opposition MPs like the NDP’s Charlie Angus are targetting the government.
“What are they going to do about coming clean with Canadians about a potentially illegal and indictable offence that happened under this Prime Minister’s watch?,” Angus asked.
The Liberals asked whether Wright is being investigated for bribery, fraud or fraud on the government.
Heritage minister James Moore refused to answer.
“The RCMP can speak to the RCMP’s investigation,” Moore said.
Harper was not in Question Period because he’s on a trip in Europe, but he has said he didn’t know about the cheque until it was reported in the media.
This secret $90,000-deal was aimed to help Senator Duffy pay back the inappropriate housing claims he had taken since 2009.
Since an RCMP investigation is underway, the ethics commissioner has been forced to suspend her investigation.
