U of A shooting victims commemorated one year after tragedy

Heavy hearts are now paired with sturdy roots in Edmonton on the anniversary of four people being shot on the University of Alberta campus.

Trees were planted in honour of the three security guards killed and a lone survivor.

Eddie Rejano, Brian Ilesic and Michelle Shegelski died in the attack, while co-worker, Cpl. Matthew Schuman survived.

Katie McLeod with G4S, the company the victims worked for, said they’ve kept in touch with the families.

“To commemorate the fact that it was one year ago today (Saturday), we felt that the tree-planting was an appropriate method of doing that,” she said, adding the company has kept in touch with the families.

The private ceremony was attended mostly by family.

The victims were working a night shift reloading ATM machines at the university mall when they were shot and killed, allegedly by another guard.

21-year-old Travis Baumgartner is still awaiting trial.
