Southwest residents start flood clean-up

Reality is setting in for Calgary homeowners affected by Alberta’s worst ever flood.

Destroyed furniture and appliances sit on silt covered lawns as the clean-up begins throughout the city.

Mission resident, Paul, says when he returned home, he discovered “utter destruction.”

“Everything is toast. Everything is gone,” he says.

Tim, who also lives on the same block, says he opened his front door slowly when he returned home, because he feared for the worst.

“I was actually quite lucky. It was quite silty and there were puddles of water all over the place. I tried to mop it up, as much as possible, but, ended up having to remove drywall. And, I’m sure the floors will have to be replaced, as well,” he says.

Matt is just thankful for the City of Calgary’s efforts as he empties his basement.

“The garbage truck that came by said whatever you’ve got, we’ll take,” he says.

Access is still restricted to heavily damaged areas in Calgary, but many homeowners are telling 660News, that’s not stopping friends and family from making their way behind barricades to help out.
