Rosebud celebrating 130th anniversary

It’s homecoming weekend in Rosebud.
The hamlet, an hour’s drive southeast of Calgary en route to Drumheller, is celebrating its 130th anniversary.
Event spokesperson Bonita Hudson tells 660News the community is known for more than the province’s only rural professional theatre which draws 40,000 visitors to the community each year.
“At one time Rosebud was quite a thriving community,” says Hudson. “In the mining years, there was up to 400 people that lived in the town. It would be hard to believe if you saw it now. Yeah, there’s a lot of history that brings people back.”
For people who remember the Orson Welles’ classic Citizen Kane, Hudson indicates it’s a well-worn joke that the hamlet might be designated by a sign with a graphic of a sleigh on it.
“We have other things we want to be known by, I guess,” says Hudson who notes that the hamlet got its name from a Blackfoot word meaning “valley of the many rosebuds.”
Homecoming weekend in Rosebud runs Saturday through Monday.
