The Calgary Zoo says the flood damage which has closed the facility has led them to lay off nearly three hundred employees.
They say the layoffs include both both seasonal and non-seasonal workers and is mostly due to the zoo being closed; they do say city workers are not affected by the layoffs.
Spokesman Lindsey Galloway tells 660News, the zoo is losing thousands of dollars every day.
He says, “We make most of our revenue in the summer months and forty per cent
of our revenue comes in July and August alone and we’re not going to be open in July.
We’ll lose $5 million in July alone, so right now we’re losing $160,000 a day.”
On Tuesday, the Zoo said it likely would not fully re-open for five months with $50 million in damage to repair and the closure meaning lost revenue of around $10 million dollars.
