The Calgary Zoo has been shrouded in bad news lately.
Workers were laid off last week and they will keep their doors partially closed until the fall, opening sections July 31st.
But the zoo is celebrating after the births of five meerkat pups.
“It’s kind of a neat story out of this,” says Trish Exton-Parder with the Zoo, “Obviously the animals have been cared for very well by their keepers and the stress hadn’t gotten to them as much as we thought they might have and these meerkats were able to produce a new family.”
The adult meerkats were rescued the night of the flood, but the keepers had been able to keep the animals safe.
She also says the tigers are back in their enclosure.
