Restrictions in place on some Banff trails

Officials are issuing a heads-up to those planning a hike in the Banff area over the next few weeks.

In an effort to protect both people and bears, Parks Canada has announced a number of restrictions on local pathways in the Rocky Mountain resort community.

Bears are out forging for berries right now.

The restrictions apply to those looking to travel on Lake Minnewanka Trail, Aylmer Pass Trail and Aylmer Lookout Trail.

Hikers must be in groups of four or more and have to be equipped with bear spray.

There are also some restrictions on cyclists and dogs.

Those caught not obeying the restrictions could be fined up to $25,000.

Outdoor enthusiasts are being urged to visit the Parks Canada website before heading out.
