Steer euthanized at Calgary Stampede

The Calgary Stampede is mourning the first death of an animal at the rodeo.
A steer suffered a severe neck injury during competition Wednesday and it had to be euthanized.
The animal failed to get back up after the steer wrestling event.
Three veterinarians in the arena rushed to assess the animal but they determined the steer’s injury was untreatable,
The run appeared to be normal; however the Calgary Stampede and independent livestock specialists will be investigating.
Recent rule changes by the Stampede include a “dog fall rule” preventing a cowboy from continuing to wrestle a steer that has splayed its legs and cannot fall safely.
This does not appear to have been the case in this situation.
The Stampede says it’s a rare occurrence.
Over the past decade more than 1,000 steers have competed in the event with just one other fatal injury.
