Bonnybrook Bridge to be dismantled

The bridge that was at the centre of a hazardous material scare in Calgary a couple of weeks ago is being dismantled.

In late June, part of the Bonnybrook CP Rail Bridge collapsed and at the time, there were five tanker cars loaded with a petroleum product used to dilute oilsands bitumen on the tracks.

A number of businesses in the area were evacuated and some roads including part of Deerfoot Trial were shutdown to traffic.

22 hours later, the product was safely unloaded and the impacted cars removed.

Ed Greenberg with CP Rail tells 660News, cranes are now working on the Bonnybrook bridge in the southeast Ogden Area.

“The first step is to remove the damaged components of the current structure and then a decision on a replacement bridge will be assessed and a decision will be made at that time,” says Greenberg.

He adds, when it comes to the bridge, there are two options: rebuild it or tear it down.

Greenberg also says CP is working with the Transportation Safety Board and Transport Canada officials who continue to investigate the incident.
