Noise Snare silenced in Calgary

The city won’t be using a device designed to crack down on noise polluters this summer.
Last year, the city put the so-called Noise Snare through the paces: just over 23,000 vehicles drove by it, 15 of them were found to exceed the 96 decibel threshold but only one ticket of $270 was issued.
Alderman Brian Pincott tells 660News, he’s disappointed the device didn’t live up to its billing, but he’s glad the city tested it anyway.
The man behind Street Noise Reductions Systems, Mark Nesdoly, says what disappoints him is the city overlooked the importance of setting a target limit, which would help determine which vehicle was actually making the noise.
He says without a proper distance target limit, a bylaw could not be drawn up and the matter never made it before city council.
Nesdoly says his $112,000 device works, and he hopes other jurisdiction won’t be put off by the failed Calgary experiment.
Last year, the city received almost 350 complaints about excessive vehicle noise.
