A routine traffic stop turned violent Monday night, after police say an officer was forced to shoot a pitbull in the head.
It happened around 8 p.m. on 52nd Street N.E. just south of 16th Avenue.
A lone female officer had pulled a Ford Explorer over for speeding and then called for back-up.
When help arrived, a pitbull ended up biting an officer in the abdomen.
He then opened fire, hitting the dog in the head.
Injured, the animal took off and was found a short time later.
Duty Inspector Patty McCallum says the pitbull had to be corralled by animal control services and was rushed to a nearby vet by police escort.
“The officer is fine, and the dog is alive and receiving medical treatments,” she says.
Police say the officer was wearing a protective vest when he was bit.
Another two dogs were also taken into custody by animal control.
The couple inside the truck was taken into custody, but at this point no charges have been laid.
As is standard procedure when a police member fires their weapon, the CPS Major Crimes Unit is investigating.
