Driver fatigue possible cause in Highway 2 crash

It appears a driver possibly fell asleep while driving on Highway 2 Sunday afternoon, causing a crash that tied up traffic for hours.

When officers arrived on scene shortly after 2:30 p.m., they found a Rav-4 on its roof in the southbound lanes of the highway, just north of Airdrie.

RCMP Sheriff Jason Graw said the vehicle entered the median between the north and southbound lanes.

“Then the driver, once he realized that the vehicle was in the median, over-corrected to try to bring the vehicle back up on the road,” he said. “That put the vehicle into a bit of a spin and when it came back up onto the road, it came up sideways and that caused the vehicle to roll.”

A man and a woman in their 60’s were in the car and the man had to be extricated by crews and transported to hospital in stable condition.

The woman was treated and released at the scene.

Charges are also pending against the driver.
